ANANTAPUR: The authorities of Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU) here have decided to act tough against the students staying in the university hostels and not paying the mess bills for long. The dues of hostels students have been making its difficult for the authorities to run the hostels. Talking to newspersons on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor A. Rama Rao, Principal of the university college C.R. Reddy and Vice-Principal and warden T. Pullaiah said that irresponsibility of the students in paying the mess bills had piled up the dues to the tune of about Rs. 1.5 crore already. The university hostels would face closure if the situation continued for long, they said.
Reminders sent
To prevent this eventuality, the authorities have decided to collect the dues from the students and sent to reminders to all the students who had mess bills dues. However, old students had paid about Rs. 30 lakhs after being served reminders, they said. Even after the old students' payment of bills the dues stood well above Rs. 1.25 crores till December 2006 end, they stated. The hostelwise mess bill dues are: Krishna hostel - Rs. 40 lakhs; Ganga hostel - Rs. 20 lakhs; Pinakini - Rs. 25 lakhs; Mahanandi - Rs. 21.45 lakhs; Chitravati - R.s 8.75 lakhs; Yamuna - Rs. 5.50 lakhs and Ganga - Rs. 8 lakhs. The authorities stated that mess bills were cleared every month/every three months in Andhra University, every semester in Sri Venkateshwara University and once a year in Osmania University. They asked the students to clear their mess bill dues by March 15 and warned that they would not be issued examination application forms, if they fail to pay up. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Vice-Chancellor, Principal, Heads of Departments, Warden, Additional Wardens and Deputy Wardens held on February 12. The defaulters would also be served legal notices and criminal cases would be registered as last resort.
