Six held for running illegal bar on ECR

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI : Six persons including the watchman of a private farmhouse on the East Coast Road (ECR) were arrested for running an illegal bar, among other charges.

Following complaints that late night parties that stretched beyond 2 a.m. organised in many bungalows and farmhouses had snowballed into brawls and ended in law and order problems, police intensified checks.

In a surprise raid conducted at a private farmhouse on Sunday, the police arrested six persons allegedly responsible for organising illegal bars. The names of the arrested were given as Bala alias Balamurugan (25), Paramveer alias Dhanish, Parvesh (44), Mathur (21), Faizal (27) and Regan.

Watchman Chandran (45) was also arrested.

However, a police release said Paramveer alias Dhanish escaped from the spot. A hunt is on to nab him.

According to the confession from the accused, the farmhouse owner, a retired army officer, was reportedly aware of the illegal act and he has been cited as the first accused.

The Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) police seized a laptop and over 50 foreign liquor bottles meant for serving guests from the house. After registering cases, the police produced the six persons in a city court, which remanded them to judicial custody.

Commissioner of Police Letika Saran said that such illegal acts that were reported in the farmhouses, resorts and hotels situated on the ECR would not be spared. She said night rounds would be stepped up during weekends.
