City colleges to participate for the first time in +NIFT

SHADES OF YOUTH: Competitors of the Western dance competition at NIFT's cultural festival in Chennai on Tuesday.

CHENNAI: A three-day cultural festival organised by the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Chennai, began here on Tuesday.

Every nook and cranny of NIFT was, on Monday morning, buzzing with activity. For the first time, other city colleges have been invited to participate in the festival.

The festival is fully loaded with a variety of events that includes a dance workshop, fashion clinic, graffiti wall and awesome race. "The theme for this year's festival is `Walk-on'. For two events — freestyle dance competition and band competition — we have invited other colleges in the city this year," said M. Vasantha, associate professor, department of fashion and textiles, and coordinator for Fashion Spectrum'07. "The event is not just a line up of event and fun for students but it is a unique festival that showcases NIFT to the general public. Visitors get to know about the institute, appreciate the students' talent and get to know what students out here do," said Ms. Vasantha.

Day one had the theme, Cyber punk, day two Masquerade and the final day Losing Grip. The highlight of day one was the live rock performance by Junkyard Groove. Day two has many interesting events lined up such as inter-college free style dance competition and a musical event titled `The Rustic Light'. Alumni of the NIFT, Chennai, will assemble for a casual get-together on February 17.

The major event lined up for the day is a fashion show by the students.
