Chennai : The State Election Commission has said that only one agent per candidate would be allowed in the polling booths on Sunday, the day of the Chennai Corporation Council elections.

Candidates can appoint a `relief agent' who may fill in during the absence of the polling booth agent. Photo identification is required to ensure that only genuine agents are admitted into the booth, the State Election Commission said in a release on Tuesday. Agents can show any Government-issued identity card (passport, driving license, voters' card, PAN card, ration card, pension pay order, railway pass, disability certificate or arms licence) for identification. Student identity cards from recognised colleges are also valid.

Meanwhile, election officials at the Chennai Corporation checked ballot boxes and sent ballot papers to 10 distribution centres in the city.

An official said that the voters' list and candidate names would be displayed in the 1,534 polling booths in 67 wards on February 17.

Voters can contact the following numbers for information or registering of complaints related to the poll process:

Chennai Corporation - 25362180 (ph) and 25382201 (fax); Chennai Police: 23452344 (ph) and 28555034 (fax); State Election Commission - 24735527/28 (ph) and 24735529 (fax). Of the total 1,534 booths, 474 have been identified as sensitive in the 67 wards, which go to polls, said Commissioner of Police Letika Saran. Each sensitive booth will be provided with additional personnel -- one sub-inspector and four policemen.
