CHENNAI : In a major catch, the Chennai (north) police secured a gang and recovered properties valued at Rs nine lakh here on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters, Commissioner of Chennai Police Letika Saran said that following complaints of properties missing in locked houses in the Madhavaram and Kodungayur areas, special teams were formed. During a surprise check, when police caught a person, he reportedly confessed to having committed a crime. Discreet inquiries revealed that he was part of a major network that included some women. The special team raided the places where the suspects were staying and seized stolen properties on their confession.The accused were Kulli alias Jayaraj (29), his wife Sophia (26) and seven others. According to them, they barged into locked houses in daytime and at night. Similarly, whenever they spotted a two-wheeler stationed in front of a house for a long time, they stole the vehicle. Joint Commissioner of Police (North) M. Ravi said that the special team had recovered stolen goods valued at Rs nine lakh, which included 47 sovereigns of gold, digital camera, DVD players, 11 two-wheelers and a home theatre system.
Another gang
Commending the work done by the Washermenpet police district, Ms. Saran said that a notorious anti-social element identified as John Jaisingh (36) of Old Washermenpet and his accomplices were secured while they were moving in two autorickshaws. Police seized six "patta knives" and two autorickshaws. The names of the arrested persons were given as Suresh (30), Ezhilarasan (24), Saravanan (21), Durai (28) and Sulaiman (25). John Jaisingh was detained twice under the Goondas Act in the past. Six non-bailable warrants were pending against him in the Washermenpet police station. The Commissioner presented rewards to the special teams in the presence of Deputy Commissioners K Sampath Kumar (Pulianthope), P Kannappan (Madhavaram) and S Rajendran (Washermenpet).
