CHENNAI : The Chennai City Traffic Police (CCTP) launched a massive campaign on Tuesday against drunken driving, specifically highlighting the dangers of driving vehicles after consuming alcohol. Road safety volunteers from among students, Rotary and Lions Clubs, and the Automobile Association of Southern India along with police officials and NSS volunteers distributed pamphlets carrying safety messages. Director General of Police D. Mukherjee launched the campaign at a function near the Gandhi statue on the Marina where Commissioner of Chennai Police Letika Saran, Additional Commissioner S R Jangid, Joint Commissioners of Police Sunil Kumar and Dorairaj participated. Later talking to reporters, Mr. Mukherjee said that driving in a drunken state was dangerous as it could result in loss of lives of both the driver and the public. Alcohol in the blood would blunt the decision-making capacity of the brain, leading to delayed reflexes. On the enforcement aspect, in January 2007 alone, 1,500 cases of drunken driving were registered and the drive would be intensified in public interest. Pamphlets with slogans "drinking and driving can cripple your life and damage your family forever", "Care for your family", "Care for yourself", "Sweet Home... Sweet Children... Don't hamper their future" were distributed to the motorists at 14 busy traffic points such as War Memorial, Koyambedu bus terminal, Labour statue on the Marina, Ashok Nagar, Egmore Railway Station, Teynampet junction and R.A Puram.
