VISAKHAPATNAM: Immediate execution of the Godavari water supply scheme, a tax system that would not burden people, emphasis on health, sanitation, pollution prevention, distribution of house sites and housing units to the poor are among the important issues in the manifesto released by the Telugu Desam Party for the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation elections. It also assured people that it would not insist on fixing meters for water connections. Implementation of free health insurance for all people, provision of more schools and improving facilities in the existing schools, better street-lighting, construction of flyovers and foot-over bridges along with parking facilities, running Rythu Bazaars by GVMC, if necessary, overseeing public distribution system with the help of women committees, putting pressure on the Government regarding rehabilitation of those displaced by HPCL and steel plant expansion and construction of the Gangavaram port and construction of stadiums and playgrounds all over the city were the other promises the TDP made. The manifesto was released by party Polit Bureau member Yanamala Ramakrishnudu at a press conference here on Tuesday. Former Minister Dadi Veerabhadra Rao while explaining the manifesto said that only the promises that could be implemented had been included and that people should realise that the Congress had failed to implement the promises it made in its manifesto in 2004 elections to Assembly and Lok Sabha. Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party leader K. Yerran Naidu said the party would implement whatever it had promised if it was voted.
Water meters
Mr. Ramakrishnudu said that TDP had never supported the fixing of water meters in tune with its policy of honouring the feelings of people on any issue. Mr. Ramakrishnudu repeated the party stand that the Mayoral candidate would be announced after the elections. Party city unit president Zaheer Ahmed said Telugu Mahila president Roja would campaign on February 15 while N. Harikrishna would be in the city on February 15 and 16.
