VISAKHAPATNAM : CPI(M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu has challenged the State Government to take the twin issues of installing water meters in Visakhapatnam and hike in property tax as a referendum in the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) elections. Addressing a roadshow along with Telugu Desam leaders at Old Gajuwaka junction on Tuesday, he criticised the lopsided policies of the Congress Government that were creating problems for the middle class and the poor while benefiting the rich. He alleged that the Government while denying house-sites to the poor was giving away land at throwaway prices to big companies. He recalled that the Congress Government had installed water meters in Vijayawada, after the municipal corporation elections, ignoring strong protests from the CPI(M), CPI and TDP. He warned that the Congress would install water meters in GVMC also, if it won the elections. The same would be the case in Hindupur and Rajahmundry also. Water supply would be privatised and there would be a steep hike in property tax. Former Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu said that the Congress rule in the State was marked by a steep hike in prices of essential commodities, suppression of the poor and sale of water.
