MANGALORE: N. Yogish Bhat, Mangalore MLA, has proposed that a Karnataka Coastal Integrated Development Authority be set up. The aim of such an authority, according to Mr. Bhat, is to have special focus on the development of tourism in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts and to concentrate on development projects in these districts. Mr. Bhat told presspersons here on Monday that the proposed authority could also take up the issue of proper utilisation of West-flowing rivers. Stating that nearly 2,000 tmc feet of water joined the Arabian Sea every year, Mr. Bhat said the water could be effectively utilised by constructing vented and check dams at various places and thereby implementing the "Paschimavahini" scheme. The authority could also be utilised to give an impetus to efforts of the Union Government to identify Udupi and Dakshina Kannada as a potential petroleum, chemicals and petrochemical investment region. Stating that the Prime Minister had evinced interest in setting up two such regions in India, Mr. Bhat said the proposed regions could attract investments of up to Rs. 50,000 crore each. Mr. Bhat also appealed to Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, who holds the finance portfolio, to set up the authority and set aside at least Rs. 100 crore for it in the next budget. Such an authority would facilitate the setting up of information technology and food parks, and other allied industries in the districts. This would help in the development of the districts, Mr. Bhat said.
