MANGALORE: Senior writer U.R. Ananthamurthy said here on Tuesday that not many Muslims were in the mainstream of society. They were disappearing from sectors such as education and government. This was a loss to society, he said after inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of the Crescent Welfare Centre in Mangalore. Mr. Ananthamurthy called upon leaders of the community to impart education to all Muslim women on priority basis. They should be given modern as well as religious education. Educating Muslim women had proved effective in Mallapuram district of Kerala, he said. Citing an example, he said that Mirza Ismail the then Diwan of Mysore had arranged for "jataka bandi" with screens to encourage Muslim women to go to schools. As a result many women from the region started attending schools, he added.B.A. Moideeen, former Minister for Education, released a souvenir. Mohammed Haji Mohiudeen, chairman of Thumbay group of educational institutions, and Yenepoya Abdullah Kunhi, chairman of Yenepoya group of educational institutions, were present. Schoolchildren presented cultural programmes.
