Pol-Com told to prepare action plan

Staff Reporter

For garbage disposal For waste disposal

KOCHI: The Secretary to the Department of Local Self Government has asked Pol-Com (Police-Communities Initiative in Kochi City) to chalk out an action plan for garbage disposal.

"Pol-Com will soon submit to the department a plan seeking guidance in proceeding with the project," said P. Vijayan, City Police Commissioner. The police had already initiated interaction with various communities in the city as part of community policing.

"The movement has earned credibility among various communities as a neutral body and this can be positively used for the benefit of the city," he said.

The strategy adopted for the drive is two-pronged. At the micro level, Pol-Com will be coordinating activities with individual resident associations. Many new resident associations are approaching the police asking for assignments.

The attempt is to drive home the message of segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste at source.

The Pol-Com officials are not confident, as it has become part of the city lifestyle that the garbage will be cleared and disposed of by the civic administration.

"Another area of concern is the disposal of non-biodegradable waste. Here, other communities associated with Pol-Com like the Ernakulam Merchants Union and Association of Hotels and Restaurants can help," said Mr. Vijayan.

It was suggested that plots could be identified with the help of these agencies for processing garbage that was not processed at the individual resident association level.

Awareness drive

"We have suggested that awareness should start at the school level," said P. Rangadasa Prabhu, president of the Ernakulam District Residents Association Apex Council (EDRAAC).

The apex council forwarded the suggestion to take up this issue from the next academic year to the Ministry of Local Self Government through the Kochi Corporation.

"We are going for an integrated approach, where garbage is treated as a source of energy and manure. We suggested bringing in agencies like Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council, Kerala," he said.
