A melodious protest

Apart from poems, they rendered a newly composed poem on Cauvery

  • Demonstration staged near Ambareesh's house

    BANGALORE: Prominent Kannada singers on Tuesday staged a novel protest against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal by singing "bhavageethes" in front of Sir Puttanna Chetty Town Hall here.

    C. Ashwath, Shimoga Subbanna, Y.K. Muddukrishna, Puttur Narasimha Nayak, Kikkeri Krishna Murthy, B.K. Sumithra and Rathnamala Prakash were among those who participated in the demonstration organised by Karnataka Sugama Sangeetha Parishat.

    Apart from the poems on Karnataka and Kannada, the singers also rendered a newly composed poem on Cauvery.

    Mr. Subbanna said the Cauvery issue was not only an emotional one but also that of life and death of the people of Karnataka. Mr. Ashwath said they were protesting against the award as it was the responsibility of the Sugama Sangeetha exponents to create public awareness on current issues. Activists of Kannada Sangarsha Samithi staged a demonstration near the J.P. Nagar residence of Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting M.H. Ambareesh demanding his resignation from the Ministry. As the activists were not allowed by the police to gather in front of Mr. Ambareesh's residence, they held at a demonstration at a nearby park. The Minister was not at his residence.

    Former MLA Prabhakar Reddy and Kodihasahalli Ramanna led the protest.

    Kannada Chaluvali leader and MLA Vatal Nagaraj rode a buffalo in front of the Legislators' Home to protest against the State Government's attitude towards the tribunal award. Mr. Nagaraj said he was riding a buffalo to highlight the State Government's thick-skinned attitude to the sentiments of the people protesting against the tribunal award.
