20 shops gutted, four hurt in clash

THENI: As many as 20 shops were set ablaze and four persons, including a policeman, were injured in a clash between drivers of two autorikshaw stands at Devadhanapatti village near here on Tuesday night.

Four persons, including Balakrishnan, a special branch constable attached to Devadhanapatti police station, were injured.

The quarrel between the two groups over setting up of an new autorickshaw stand near Arisikadai bus stand turned into a communal clash as both groups resorted to violence and arson. The gangs set the shops on fire and pelted stones on buses. One bus was damaged. Traffic was disrupted on Theni-Dindigul highway. A posse of police was deployed to bring the situation under control. Superintendent of Police Najmul Hoda and Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Sanjeev Kumar visited the spot and assessed the situation.
