Major rural water supply plan for Delhi

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday said the Delhi Government has made a comprehensive plan to provide water supply in the Capital's rural areas.

Speaking at the inauguration of filter water supply at Neb Sarai and Saidullajab through the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant, Ms. Dikshit said with the start of this clean water supply a major demand of the two villages had been fulfilled.

Stating that the Government was committed to providing adequate water and power supply to the people, she said with acceleration in the pace of development in all fields the scenario of Delhi would change significantly before the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

The Chief Minister disclosed that Delhi Jal Board had commissioned a citywide study, with a planning perspective of 2011 and the study had created a workable model to commission 109 underground reservoirs (UGRs). While 59 UGRs have already been commissioned, she said DJB would commission another 50 underground reservoirs by 2009.

"This would go a long way in improving availability and ensuring pressure of water in various parts of Delhi,'' she declared.

Ms. Dikshit said the Jal Board had also augmented water supply to the city from 570 MGD in 1998 to 815 MGD now.

With the commissioning of the 140 MGD Sonia Vihar plant, she said the supply was to improve drastically but that had not happened as the plant at present was only able to treat 55 MGD due to non-availability of adequate raw water from neighbouring UP.

"However, the DJB is trying its best to cover more and more areas with filter water supply wherever technical feasibility exists. The DJB has worked out a technically viable interim arrangement to give part water supply to Saidullajab, including Anupam Apartments and Neb Sarai areas, while Malviya Nagar UGR is under construction," she said.
