dated February 15, 1957: PM defends foreign policy

Prime Minister Nehru made a categorical declaration on February 13 that the foreign policy India followed was the correct policy. "We will continue to follow this policy in the future also as long as we have the right to shape this policy," he said while addressing an election meeting in Cuttack. The Prime Minister said India was not going to align herself with any power bloc and would try to befriend all "including those who might be dissatisfied with us." This applied as well to Pakistan with whom India wanted to be on the friendliest of terms. "We do not want war with Pakistan. Till the other day India and Pakistan were one country. We are now two and will remain two, but we want to keep the doors of friendship open to all, including Pakistan."
