Former MLA, five others die in accident

SALEM: Former Mettur MLA Sundarambal Marappan, her husband Marappan and four others were killed when their jeep collided head-on with a town bus at K.R. Thoppur near here on Wednesday.

The former AIADMK MLA, her husband and five others were returning to Mettur in the jeep after attending an agitation organised to protest against the Kerala's opposition to formation of the Salem Railway Division. While Marappan (55), Subramaniam (50), Dhanakodi (45) and Shanmugam were killed on the spot, Sundarambal Marappan and Ramasamy died on way to the hospital.

AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa condoled the death of Sundarammbal and others in the accident. — Staff Reporter

Leopard killed in hit-and-run

Hosur: A leopard was killed in a hit-and-run at Madarasanapalli on the Salem-Bangalore National Highway early on Wednesday.

According to Forest department sources, the animal was trying to cross the Highway when an unidentified vehicle hit it and sped away. The leopard sustained multiple fractures on its head and died on the spot. — Staff Reporter

Employment registration

CHENNAI: The Government has given one more opportunity to unemployed youth to renew their registration with employment exchanges. Those who failed to renew their registration between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2003 could do so before April 30 this year, according to an official release. — Special Correspondent

Draw of lots for Housing Board flats

CHENNAI: The Housing Board will hold a draw of lots at Periyar marriage hall in Anna Nagar West at 11 a.m. on Thursday for its self-financing scheme of 24 flats to be built at Villivakkam. — Special Correspondent

Liquor shops to remain closed

CHENNAI: Liquor shops in Chennai and areas of Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram district coming under the control of Chennai Police will remain closed from Friday (5 pm) to Sunday (5 pm), in view of by-elections to several wards of the Chennai Corporation. The shops will also be closed on the day of counting (February 20), according to an official release on Tuesday. — Special Correspondent

MDMK to observe fast on Saturday

CHENNAI: The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will observe a fast on Saturday in Chennai to urge the Central and State Governments to protect rights of the State on the Cauvery issue.

To be staged in front of Valluvar Kottam, the fast will be led by party general secretary Vaiko, according to a release.

Mr. Vaiko said the fast had been organised to explain to the people "harmful effects" of the final order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. There was a sense of fear among Tamils living in Karnataka that there might be a repeat of what happened in 1991 following the notification of the interim order. The Central and Karnataka Governments should take action to allay the apprehension, he said. — Special Correspondent

Union protest

Udhagamandalam: A fast would be observed under the aegis of the Cordite Factory Labour Union at Aruvankadu on February 17 in protest against the alleged anti-labour attitude of the management. General Secretary of the Union G. Vijayakumar said a procession would be taken out and a dharna staged here on February 18.

Free TV sets

Udhagamandalam: The second phase of the distribution of free colour TV sets would commence on Thursday. Collector Santosh K. Misra said it would be inaugurated at Masinagudy by Khadi Board Minister K. Ramachandran, at Ithalar by Udhagamandalam MLA B. Gopalan, at Bandishola by Coonoor MLA A. Soundarapandian and at Kengarai by the Chairman, Kotagiri Panchayat Union, K.M. Raju.

Rowdy murdered

TIRUCHI : A rowdy was found murdered at Ayyanvaikkal near here on Wednesday. Mothilal (22) of Thalakudi was detained under the Goondas Act earlier. He was involved in attempt to murder and threatening cases, the police said.

The Superintendent of Police, N. Rajasekaran, conducted enquiries.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI : The level in Mettur dam stood at 82.97 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 231 cusecs and the discharge was 1,500 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Interview for private firm appointment

ERODE: The District Employment Exchange on Chennimalai Road will hold interview to recruit candidates required for a few private firms on February 15.

According to a press release, the firms have called for the posts of sales representatives, tailoring assistants, technical assistants and delivery boys. For the post of sales representatives, the candidate should have a degree and training in computer. For the post of tailoring assistant, a pass in SSLC and a diploma in tailoring are required.

For those who wish to appear for technical assistants, the candidate should have passed SSLC and hold ITI certificate in fitter, turner, electrician and wiremen. For delivery boys, a pass in SSLC and Plus Two is required. A four-member committee from the District Industries Centre, THADCO, Khadi and Village Industries Department and Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation will conduct the interview and select the candidates.

Bodies recovered

ERODE: The Erode Railway Police recovered two bodies of youth on Wednesday near Vendipalayam on the railway track five km from Erode. According to police, the identity of the two is not known. Police suspect that the two are college students and might have committed suicide by jumping before a running train. Erode Railway police are investigating.

Man found dead

TUTICORIN: A 50-year-old man was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Tiruchendur near here on Wednesday.

Stab wounds were visible all over his body. He was later identified as Mariappan, a resident of Tiruchendur.

Bench mourns death of judge

MADURAI: Judges, lawyers and staff of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday mourned the death of Additional Judge Makena Eswara Narasimha Patrudu.

After observing silence for two minutes, the court work was suspended for the day.

The Judge died of a massive heart attack on Sunday.

Killed in fire accident

SIVAKASI: Three women workers were killed in a fire accident at a cracker unit near here on Tuesday.

The deceased are R. Veeralakshmi (27), M. Manickam (22) and her mother, M. Lakshmi (45).

The incident took place when the workers were handling explosive materials to make fancy crackers.

Last date extended

MADURAI: The Madurai Kamaraj University has extended the last date for receipt of filled in applications to February 21 for some courses for the academic year 2007-08.

The varsity also postponed the entrance test scheduled for March 17 and 18 to March 24 and 25, a press release from I. Singaram, Registrar of MKU, has said.

The courses include M.Sc in Microbial Gene Technology, Biochemical Technology, Genomics and Sub-Aqua Marine Ecology/ Toxicogenomics and Electronics/Instrumentation.
