Plea to implement prohibition

HYDERABAD: Representatives of several organisations on Wednesday called on Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to remind him about his pre-election promise to put an end to sale of liquor in a phased manner. They appealed to him to close down the belt-shops that mushroomed all over the State but Dr. Reddy asked them to show at least a single shop so that the Government could take action. They urged the Government to allocate 10 per cent of the income from liquor sales to fund the anti-liquor campaign. The delegation was led by social activist K.B.G. Tilak. - Special Correspondent

Temples burgled

KURNOOL: A series of burglaries took place in Atmakur town of Kurnool district on Tuesday night. According to reports, a gang broke open "hundis" in two temples and took away the collection, which is estimated to be around Rs. 4,000. In another incident, a general store was burgled and valuables worth Rs. 20,000 were taken away. The gang also struck at a house and took away three tolas gold. - Special Correspondent

One held, pistol seized

WARANGAL: The police arrested the Adilabad district secretary of Godavari Loya Praja Prathighatana, Gopathi Rajalingu alais Santosh of Mancherial here on Wednesday. Superintendent of Police Soumya Mishra said that the police seized a .9mm country made pistol and 5 rounds of ammunition. Previously Santosh worked in Phani Baxi group at Adilabad District. - Staff Reporter

B.Ed classes from February 19

HYDERABAD: B.Ed classes for this year will begin on February 19 and a decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the P.G. Admissions Committee held at the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) here on Tuesday. The meeting also decided that admissions in B.Ed colleges should be completed by February 28. - Staff Reporter

Rich tributes paid to Justice Patrudu

HYDERABAD: A full court meeting comprising sitting judges of the High Court on Wednesday paid rich tributes to Justice M.E. N. Patrudu, sitting judge of the Madras High Court, who passed away on Sunday.

Chief Justice G.S. Singhvi spoke at length the services rendered by Patrudu towards activising the judicial process and said that the Bar and the Bench would remember his service. High Court suspended the work in the afternoon session after the full court reference. - Legal Correspondent

Protection cell sought

KADAPA: The Government should constitute a protection cell for inter-caste couples and allot funds and staff, Kulavivaksha Vyatireka Porata Samithi's Ideal Couples wing convenor A. Ravibabu demanded on Wednesday. Stating that a GO enhancing incentive for inter-caste couples from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 25,000, he demanded grant of house site, individual loans and ration cards for them in a memorandum to district Collector M.T. Tejovathi acquitted former Mayor Bangi Anantaiah of TDP from the charges of bribing voters on the eve of municipal elections as the prosecution failed to support the charges with evidence. A TV channel had captured the images of Mr. Ananthaiah distributing money. - Special Correspondent

52 teak logs seized

KADAPA: Police recovered 52 teak logs, worth Rs. 96,000, hidden under a haystack in Kota street in Porumamilla mandal on Wednesday. None was arrested. The seized logs would be handed over to forest officials, according to police. - Staff Reporter

RTC driver killed

KURNOOL: An APSRTC driver was killed and 14 others sustained injuries when a bus and a lorry collided near Gonegandla in the early hours of Wednesday. Driver Ramudu died after admission to a hospital here. - Special Correspondent

AISF demonstration

KURNOOL: AISF staged a demonstration at the KNR College and collectorate here on Wednesday demanding action against the management for the murder of a student. They wanted responsibility fixed on the managements for any incidents in future.- Special Correspondent

Grain shops raided

ADILABAD: A team of officials from Civil Supplies Department on Wednesday conducted inspections of seven grain shops for verification of stocks of pulses and rice. The inspections were conducted in order to curb dumping. Shopkeepers were advised to take licence for trade in pulses.-Staff Reporter

Botany seminar

WARANGAL: The Botany Department of Kakatiya University is organising a one-day national seminar on `Recent Advances in Plant Sciences' on February 15.

The inaugural function of the seminar will be held on Thursday at 9.30 a.m. in the Venkataramaiah seminar hall. UGC Member Prof. Rammurthy Naidu will be the chief guest at the inaugural function and noted scientist Prof. G.M.Reddy, will deliver the key note address. -Staff Reporter

Fire official in

ACB trap

Kakinada: ACB sleuths caught B. Chandrasekhar, Superintendent of Divisional Fire Office, while he was allegedly receiving Rs.1,000 from a fireman for processing the file relating to his reinstatement here on Wednesday.

According to the officials, the complainant, Venkata Ramana, was dismissed from service on the charge of misappropriation. Basing on the district court's order acquitting him of the charge, he had applied for reinstatement. - Correspondent

Probe sought into students' death

VIZIANAGARAM: D.V.G. Sankara Rao, former TDP MP, has appealed to the State Human Rights Commission to probe into the deaths of tribal students in ashram/residential schools, ITDA, Parvathipuram.

Dr. Sankara Rao said in a release on Wednesday that the deaths had become a regular phenomenon for the past three years. - Correspondent

Office-bearers elected

Kakinada: Yerramsetti Tata Rao has been elected president of the East Godavari district Kapu Udyog Seva Samithi at its general body meeting held on Tuesday.
