Toddy consumption checks fluorosis: MLA

HYDERABAD: Palla Venkat Reddy (CPI) suggested the Government to market toddy as a soft drink for providing employment to lakhs of toddy tappers.

"It also acts effectively against spread of fluoride," he said, participating in the debate on motion of thanks to the Governor in the Assembly on Wednesday. "Doctors have suggested that toddy controls fluoride and the Government must examine the suggestion."

The five-hour debate witnessed members of different parties making interesting observations. MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi regretted that Urdu was not being implemented as the second official language in 15 districts. "There is nobody to translate the Urdu petitions submitted in Government offices," he complained.

G. Kishan Reddy, BJP floor leader, who came to the House carrying a laptop, pleaded with panel Speaker N. Manohar to allow him to speak beyond the allotted time.

Fate of diabetics

As the session continued beyond 1.30 p.m, N.Narasimha Reddy (TRS) questioned the Chair about the fate diabetics in the House. "You should make arrangements for lunch if the working hours are extended," he demanded, prompting Legislative Affairs Minister K. Rosaiah to quip he was also a diabetic. "If all members confine to their allotted time the House will automatically conclude at 1.30 pm," he noted.

Former Minister M. Satyanarayana Rao, who came late, spent sometime speaking to the Telugu Desam members. Revenue Minister D.Prasada Rao and K.Sujathamma (Cong) were seen distributing wedding cards in the House.
