Staff Reporter

PUDUKOTTAI : Consequent to the seizure of components used for the manufacture of improvised explosives devices off the Rameswaram coast, the police have stepped up vigil in the coastal areas of Pudukottai, which borders Ramanathapuram district.

With the district providing refuge to over 3,400 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, a close watch is being maintained in the three camps where they have all been accommodated. The camps have been functioning at Azhiyanilai, Thoppukollai and Thekkatur.

In the last one and half months alone, 40 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees had landed in the coastal areas such as Gopalapattinam, Memisal, Kottaipattinam and were sent to the Mandapam camp near Rameswaram after being interrogated at the place of landing in the district.

The Superintendent of Police, Pudukottai, Kapil Saratkar, said vehicle checks had been intensified. The police in the coastal areas had been sounded an alert, he said.
