Nagapattinam : A mass contact programme convened by Tenkasi S.Jawahar, Collector, at Kodiakadu in Vedaranyam taluk on Wednesday evoked good response from the people and a large number of villagers turned up and represented to the Collector to redress their grievances. The Collector received 245 petitions from the public for free house site pattas, streetlight and road facilities in rural areas and issue of new family cards. The Collector took immediate action on 50 per cent of the petitions and instructed the officials to take steps to provide necessary assistance to the petitioners. Mr. Jawahar highlighted the achievements of the government's welfare projects and schemes and appealed to the people to attend the free health camps being conducted under the `Varumun Kappom' scheme and make use of the facilities. The Collector said that a fish auction centre would be constructed at Kodiakarai for the benefit of the fishermen and pointed out that Rs.75 lakh would be spent for development works through the MLA's Local Area Development Fund in Vedaranyam area. Mr. Jawahar said 60,000 free colour television sets would be given to the poor people in the district this year and said that 8,158 beneficiaries had been identified for getting free LPG stove and gas connection before March this year in the district. S.K. Vedarathinam, Vedaranyam MLA, and others attended the mass contact programme.
