Roaring trade at Jammikunta market

Staff Reporter

Cotton comes in huge quantities from Karimnagar, Warangal

  • Traders from Guntur come to buy cotton
  • Yield already fetches farmers Rs. 35 cr.

KARIMNAGAR: The Jammikunta agricultural marketyard, which is stated to be one of the biggest yards of the Telangana region, is doing roaring business with the huge arrival of cotton and other agricultural produce.

This marketyard, which is known for huge arrivals of cotton and better marketing facilities, had encouraged farmers of Karimnagar and neighbouring Warangal district to sell away their produce here.

Because of good quality of cotton i.e 30 mm, the traders from the district and even Guntur have arrived in the marketyard to procure the cotton by providing anywhere from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,200 per quintal.

Accordingly, the traders have procured a whopping 1.85 lakh metric tonnes of cotton from the farmers from November 2006 till date by making a payment of some Rs. 35 crores to the farmers.

The Cotton Corporation of India had procured only 44,050 quintals of cotton providing Rs 8.82 crores to the farmers.

Incidentally, the CCI had interfered only when the rate was less for the farmers and procured cotton between Rs 1,983 to Rs 2,010 per quintal.
