IGNOU ties up with Commonwealth

Indira Gandhi National Open University has initiated collaborative efforts with Commonwealth of Learning, Canada, and Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA), Vice-Chancellor V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai announced this past week.

"As a first step it is proposed to have a joint workshop with CEMCA on either e-learning or multimedia. There is also a proposal to revise and re-launch the Commonwealth Executive Master of Business Administration and Commonwealth Executive Master of Public Administration programmes," Prof. Pillai said.

IGNOU has also decided to re-initiate the Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship for students.

NIIT, billed as Asia's largest IT trainer, has been conferred the Avaya Global Connect Award for Customer Responsiveness in the Educational Institutions' category for the second consecutive year.

The award, instituted by Avaya Global Connect, a leading player in converged communication solution space, aims at honouring companies that have fared well in their customer responsive policies and practices.

The Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women Studies at Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi organised a two-day national seminar on "Celebrating a Century of Muslim Women's Education in India" recently.

Former Foreign Secretary Salman Haider was the chief guest, while Planning Commission member Syeda Hameed delivered the keynote address. Jamia Centre for Distance and Open Learning Director Mohammad Miyan chaired the inaugural session.

The seminar was held to commemorate the establishment in 1906 of the Abdullah Girls' School in Aligarh, which was one of the schools that contributed towards providing the choice of formal schooling to Muslim women in the country at that time.

A group of 12 students of the Centre for Study of Law and Governance at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi doing M. Phil. and Ph. D. research on police reforms visited Nithari village in Noida over the weekend. Accompanied by representatives of the National Human Rights Commission and the People's Union for Civil Liberties, the team went about investigating various dimensions of police reforms.The group along with Bureau of Police Research and Development Director-General Kiran Bedi would make its observations public next week.

Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College of Delhi University organised a two-day international symposium on ``Ciliate Biology'' this past week. Delegates from several countries attended the event.

The symposium offered a platform for interaction among national and international scientists working in different areas of ciliate research and students of life sciences.

The Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad, was the winner of the Delhi regional final of the third edition of "Tata Crucible -- The Campus Quiz", an inter-college business quiz focusing on students of engineering colleges and business schools.

In the contest held on the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, over the weekend, nearly 80 teams participated in the preliminary rounds. The winning team of Vikram Venkateswaran and Arjun Siva won a cash prize of Rs. 60,000. The duo will now travel to Mumbai to participate in the national finals of the quiz on March 5. -- Parul Sharma
