Efforts on to revive provision of flood protection structures along Adyar

T. Ramakrishnan

Encroachment and acquisition of a portion of land contributed to the delay

CHENNAI : Efforts are on to revive the work of providing flood protection structures along vulnerable stretches of the Adyar river and removal of silt from the watercourse.

The Public Works Department entrusted the work to a Malaysia-headquartered company in September 1999 and the work began three months later. The scheduled deadline was early 2001. After carrying out nearly one half of the work, the company had abandoned it, according to a PWD official.

The work was proposed in view of flooding of areas along the Adyar river in 1997. At the time of proposing the work, the cost was estimated at Rs. 22.6 crore. A sum of around Rs. 10 crore had been paid to the firm, the official says.

There are other factors, which have also contributed to the delay. Encroachment and acquisition of a portion of land are among the factors.

Recently, when the authorities addressed communication to the company, it was returned with the postal endorsement that there was no such addressee. Now, the authorities have issued a public notice in the media in the State and in Malaysia. The official says the department will wait for some more time. If there is no response, it will cancel the contract and invite tenders again.
