PLEA TO GOVERNOR: Senior BJP senior leader and Leader of the Opposition Lalji Tandon (right) handing over a memorandum to Governor T.V. Rajeswar after the Supreme Court judgment on BSP MLAs, in Lucknow on Wednesday.

LUCKNOW: Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Lalji Tandon remained non-committal on the possibility of the BJP moving a no-confidence motion against the Mulayam Singh Government. Mr. Tandon stressed that the Government should be dismissed.

Mr. Tandon , who met Governor T.V. Rajeswar, said the Government should be dismissed as the court verdict implied that the Government was formed after engineering defections. Mr. Yadav proved his majority on the floor of the House on January 25 only through defections, as the 15 Opposition MLAs who supported the Government were still in their parent parties and not expelled.

BSP MP and party counsel Satish Chandra Mishra said by implication the status of 24 other Loktantrik Bahujan Dal MLAs was similar to that of the 13 disqualified legislators. Stating that government formation had been rendered unconstitutional, he demanded its dismissal.

Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Salman Khurshid said the illegally formed Government should be dismissed legally.
