Who says print media is dying?

"MEDIA LANDSCAPE: Challenges and Controversies" was the keenly debated topic of a recent seminar organised by the Christ College Department of Media Studies. The seminar sessions participated by many key mediapersons from the city had topics such as "Commodification of news," "Radio as the truly democratic medium," "television and new media towards public journalism" and "Film: censorship and creativity."

Delivering the keynote address, Pioneer editor-in-chief Chandan Mitra said the print media was not dying but was actually growing at an unprecedented rate in the country. But glamourised and sensationalised news spilling over to the mainstream media was a cause for concern, he said.

Topics such as opportunities for journalists in a rapidly developing country like India, ethics of journalism and whether media played a constructive role in society, generated a lot of heat during the discussions.

Convocation

THE OHIO University-Christ College Academy, a city-based management institute, celebrated its seventh convocation ceremony at the Christ College campus here, last week.

Robert Glidden, President-Emeritus, Ohio University, accentuating the need for higher education, said only 7 per cent of the population in the age group of 18 to 24 in India had access to higher education. "The National Knowledge Commission has observed that 1,500 new universities will be needed to attain a gross enrolment ratio of at least 15 per cent by 2015," . Honoured on the occasion were two toppers from the academy, Vivek Srinivasan with 3.934 CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) out of 4 and Inderpreet Kaur Kooner with 3.919 CGPA.

The Ohio University-Christ College Academy for Management Education is a collaborative endeavour between Ohio University's College of Business and Christ Education Society.
