Shekhawat plea for mining sector

NEW DELHI: A holistic safety approach will accelerate the growth of the mining sector in a sustainable manner, according to Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

Presenting the National Safety Awards (Mines) for the year 2002-2003 here on Wednesday, Mr. Shekhawat emphasised the need for protecting the environment and called upon scientists and engineers to put in place sustainable mining practices. He exhorted them to establish an integrated network of operations ensuring environmentally safe mining, safety of workers and the safety and welfare of the local people.

Mr. Shekhawat said a new safety ethos must emerge in the mining sector.

New road opened

NEW DELHI: Following an inspection of the Disused Canal Road that has come up over a drain and now connects Karkari More to Marginal Bund Road in East Delhi, Urban Development Minister A. K. Walia on Wednesday inaugurated one of its carriageways that would significantly ease vehicular pressure on Vikas Marg.

The carriageway has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 99 crore and would provide an alternative road parallel to Vikas Marg. The 3-km-long road provides a direct approach as there are no traffic signals on it. It passes through densely populated areas of Shastri Nagar, East Laxmi Nagar, Bank Enclave, Gagan Vihar and Geeta Colony.

Three held for murder

NEW DELHI: Three persons have been arrested by the North Delhi police in connection with the murder of a resident of Chandigarh whose body was found at Timarpur here earlier this month. According to the police, 30-year-old Shatrudhan allegedly had illicit relations with the wife of prime accused Raja Ram, a labourer working at Jharoda Dairy in Timarpur. When Raja came to know about this, he called Shaturdhan to Delhi and allegedly killed him with the help of his relatives Lala Ram and Lallu.

The breakthrough came when the elder brother of the deceased saw a notice in a newspaper and identified his body.

Man arrested

NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering a girl in Model Town here.

According to the police, Santosh had gone to the girl's house to wish her on Valentine's Day. However, the girl snubbed him. An infuriated Santosh then allegedly stabbed her. She was taken to hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Four die in accidents

NEW DELHI: Four persons, including a woman, were killed in four road accidents in the Capital in the past 24 hours. Sixty-year-old Premwati was run over by a DTC bus near Badarpur crossing on Wednesday. She was crossing the road when the bus plying between AIIMS and Faridabad knocked her down.

In another incident, 30-year-old Satbeer, a tractor driver, was killed when a tempo hit him on Chhattarpur Road.

Thirty-year-old Nitant Bal was killed and his friend Rakesh injured when a container hit their motorcycle in Kalkaji on Tuesday night. In another accident, Hrithik Moolchandani (30) died on the spot after he was hit by an unknown vehicle near Nehru Place on Wednesday afternoon.
