NEW DELHI: The Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday passed two proposals pertaining to strengthening the Building Department and creation of a cadre of various posts for improving infrastructure of the Engineering Department in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games 2010. To improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the Building Department, the Standing Committee passed the proposal to create 24 posts of assistant engineer (civil) at a pay scale of Rs. 6.500-10,500 plus allowances on a permanent basis. The Municipal Commissioner had forwarded the proposal in December 2001. As per the new set-up, there would be one superintending engineer, 12 executive engineers, 36 assistant engineers, 68 junior engineers and other lower level staff in each zone. Every municipal ward will have one junior engineer and for every two wards there would be one assistant engineer. At present the work of the Building Department is being handled by the staff from the Works Department as an additional charge. This was affecting the efficiency of the Building Department. Keeping in mind preparations for the Commonwealth Games 2010 and ensure quality in development works, the Standing Committee also cleared phase-wise creation of cadres of different posts for the Project Cell which is taking care of the preparations for the Games. In the first phase, four posts of superintending engineer, nine of executive engineers, 27 posts of assistant engineers and 30 junior engineers would be created. All the posts are supposed to be filled up by promotion of candidates from within the departments.
