YOUNG TALENT: Tribal children performing a cultural programme at the rural sports festival of Montfort school in Yercaud.
YERCAUD: The annual rural sports festival of Montfort Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School here brought the tribal children's passion for sports and games to light.
Hamlets
About 4,000 children from various tribal hamlets of Yercaud hills enthusiastically participated in the sports events. They exhibited their skills and competed with one another for the top honours in various events. The festival was organised for the school-going and out-of-school children living in the villages in Yercaud hills.
Games
Besides sporting events, fun games such as sack race and frog-race were also held as part of the sports festival. The children who had come to the event also performed cultural programmes, much to the delight of the onlookers. The `Thappattam' dance by a group of tribal students received thunderous applause from the audience. The organisers also distributed T-Shirts specially made for the festival to all the children. The highlight of the festival was a programme on national integration.
Winners
Director of School Education R. Kannan distributed prizes and certificates to the winners of various events organised during the sports festival. He encouraged the students to show interest in sports, as it would stand them in good stead. Chief Educational Officer S. Sethurama Varma, District Education Officer Umarani and School Principal K.J. George also spoke. A large number of parents of the children attended the festival and cheered the participants.
