Mangal, Sushma are champions

GUWAHATI: Mangal Singh Champia of Andhra Pradesh and Sushma of Uttar Pradesh won the individual titles in recurve archery in the 33rd National Games at the Sonarpur Complex here on Thursday.

Champia staved off a stiff fight from Jharkhand's Rahul Banerjee in the men's final, while Sushma stopped Dola Banerjee of Jharkhand in the women's final. The defeats meant the brother-sister combine of Dola and Rahul failed to win an individual gold.

Jharkhand, country's archery powerhouse, failed to dominate as it won only two gold medals, four silvers and two bronzes for a total of eight. Still, it led the medals tally in this discipline. Manipur, with two golds in the Indian round, was second, while Uttar Pradesh was third with two gold medals.

Women: Individual: Sushma (U.P.) 98 bt Dola Banerjee 96. Bronze: Chekrovolu Swuro (Nag) 101 bt Reena Kumari (Jhar) 99.

Team: U.P. 182 bt Jharkhand 179. Bronze: Assam163 bt Nagaland 159.

Compound: Men: Individual: Rajwant Singh Sidhu (Dli) 110 bt Vikash Sehrawat (Dli) 110 (the former won on tie-break). Bronze: Aryavart Dabas (Mah) 105 bt Ch. Lenin (AP) 103.

Women: Individual: Manjudha Soy (Jhar) 109 bt Jhano Hansdah (Jhar) 105. Bronze: Namita Yadav (Jhar) 104 bt Sakro Besra (Jhar) 98.
