`No' to Parzania

The threats being issued to cinema owners of Gujarat to prevent them from screening the film Parzania amount to a gross violation of the freedom of speech and expression guaranteed under the Constitution. Yielding to the threats will only make things difficult for right-minded and responsible citizens in future. It is the duty of the Gujarat Government to protect the fundamental rights of the people, in this case the freedom of speech.

As a 21-year-old, I appreciate the efforts of those who are working hard to bring the ground realities to the notice of the young in the State. Many people, including my friends who were in Gujarat at the time of the riots, were unaware of the paranoia that prevailed before they saw the movie.

Why shouldn't it be released in Gujarat? Why do some sections want their children to remain unaware of what happened during the riots and vote for the wrong people again? We can give peace a chance only if we confront the realities and not fall asleep again thinking the terrible happenings were a bad dream.

Gunjan Aylawadi,
New Delhi
