Letters to the Editor
"Keep the tracks clean" the message is prominently displayed at railway stations on platforms that reek of garbage. In most stations, toilets are situated at the far end of the platforms, and vendors, coolies and people relieve themselves on the tracks. Toilets of stationary trains are also used. Proliferating slum settlements line the approaches to most metros, where people openly defecate on railway tracks. For any clean-up act, slums and encroachments should be cleared, and chemical toilets should be introduced on all trains. More toilet facilities should be provided at stations, and those of stationary trains should be kept locked. The catering staff should be instructed not to dispose of plastic containers and cutlery on the tracks.
