Flooded with appreciation

Taking a peek into the lives of Varanasi's widows, filmmaker Deepa Mehta's Oscar-nominated film "Water" has been set against the backdrop of Mahatma Gandhi's civil disobedience movement.

And Deepa is proud that her film that took five years to complete amid death threats by fanatics back home is competing for this year's Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film. Deepa says she is indebted to Canada as well as India for the selection of "Water" for the Oscar race.

"I want all Indians to join me in this celebration," said Deepa at a press conference in the Capital on Thursday.

John Abraham, who is also part of the film, says Deepa is an actor's director. "Different directors have different ways of filmmaking. Some concentrate on looks, others on the sets. Deepa concentrates on sensibility. As she knows the positive points and limitations of her actors, she projects their characters accordingly."

From a bike-riding villain in "Dhoom" to playing a dhoti-kurta clad character in his latest film, John says he attended a month-long workshop to get into the skin of the character.

A tale of three women's rebellion against gender injustice, the film will be released on March 9.
