History revision opposed

BEIJING: The Chinese Government has voiced firm opposition towards Taiwan authority's revision of history textbooks that plays down the Nanjing massacre or neglect it in certain versions. ``Nanjing massacre was a monstrous crime committed by Japanese militarists against the Chinese people,'' said Li Weiyi, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council. He said it was a tragic period of history that the entire human society and every descendant of the Chinese nation must not forget. ``Past experience, if not forgotten, is a guide for the future.'' He said history textbooks of senior high schools in Taiwan should pass on the objective and true history to the next generation. ``We firmly oppose any move to distort, obliterate and confuse history.''
