BANGALORE: A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party leaders on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Governor T.N. Chaturvedi expressing "resentment against the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal verdict", which they felt had done great injustice to the people of Karnataka in general and farmers of the Cauvery basin in the State in particular. BJP general secretary H.N. Ananth Kumar, MP, and others said in their letter, "the problem of Cauvery water-sharing goes back to the time of the British rule. The single crop cultivation by farmers in Karnataka is being compared with the three-crop cycle in Tamil Nadu, while awarding the share of the Cauvery water." This, they contended, restricted Karnataka in proper utilisation of water and in cultivation of the crops of its choice. The memorandum also said the award "puts a seal on the mouth of the ever-thirsty people of Bangalore and other towns situated in the Cauvery basin in Karnataka." This award has taken away a basic right of the people of this State to clean drinking water. In every aspect, the award had put the people of Karnataka in jeopardy and, the memorandum said, the BJP leaders opposed the order on behalf of the people and the neglected farmers. "We also request the tribunal to reconsider all the aspects of the problem and give justice to Karnataka," the memorandum said. The other signatories to the memorandum include Bangalore North MP H.T. Sangliana and the State Scheduled Caste Morcha president C. Munikrishna.
