Eight die in road accident

GULBARGA: Eight persons, including three children, died when a cement-laden truck on top of which they were travelling overturned near Waghdhari village in Akkalkot taluk in Solapur district in Maharashtra early on Thursday.

According to reports reaching the police headquarters here, all the victims hailed from Chandapur village in Shahapur taluk of Gulbarga district and were going to Pune in search of work. Ten others have been admitted to Solapur Government Hospital, and the condition of some of them was said to be serious. The police said that most of the victims died due to asphyxiation when they were caught under the heap of cement bags that fell on them. Police suspect that they must have boarded the truck in Gulbarga. The dead were dentified as Venkamma B. Gundekar (3), Devamma Bhimanna (1), Renuka L. Gonagu (21), Lakshmibai Pradhanappa (30), Bhimanna M. Kudalgi (30), Mallamma B. Kudalgi (25), Devakamma Nanagowda Meti (40) and Rayamma B. Meti (7).
