Johnnie Walker tournament from today

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Angad Kalaan will spearhead the Indian team against England and Spain in the three-nation Johnnie Walker Gold Cup Polo tournament from February 16 to 18.

The tournament will be played on a round-robin league basis and the winner will get Rs. 400,000. The runner-up and the third placed teams will be presented Rs. 250,000 and Rs. 150,000 respectively.

There will be two awards for the `most valuable player' of the tournament and the `most valuable pony', carrying Rs. 50,000 each. "This event will be a great boost for Indian polo. We have a good team. Four of us will play against Spain and four others against England. We look forward to a great day of polo on Sunday'', said Angad Kalaan.

The Director of Events of the Indian Polo Association, Brig. V. P. Singh, who unveiled the trophy, said that the tournament would be a good preparation for the Indian team that would compete in the World Cup qualifying event to be held in Auckland, New Zealand, from February 25.

The regional qualifier will feature South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Pakistan apart from India. The top two teams will make it to the World Cup final. India had finished fifth in the world in 2001.

In the current tournament, the first two matches are scheduled to be held at the Nicholson Range in the Delhi Cantonment, and the last match will be at the Jaipur Polo ground on Sunday.

Sameer Suhag, Manupal Godara, Simran Shergill, Tarun Sirohi, Ravi Rathore, Jai Shergill, Abhimanyu Pathak and Vishal Chauhan will be the other members of the Indian squad.

There will also be a `fashion extravaganza' by Tarun Tahiliani, as part of the overall programme.
