Kozhikode: An elephant ran amok in Koyilandy town here on Thursday morning, creating tension for a few hours. Casualties and loss of property were not reported. The pachyderm was tranquillised by K.C. Panicker, elephant expert and retired Professor of Parasitology, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, Thrissur. The elephant, Vignaraj, owned by K.P. Raveendran, looked like feeling uneasy when the animal was taken to Kanjilasheri Siva Temple festival at Pookad on Wednesday afternoon. Later, the mahouts chained it on the premises of a house near the Cheliya Alangod temple. However, the elephant broke the chains in the evening. However, it did not create problems. Dr. Panicker, who was in Thrissur, was informed of the condition of the elephant. He reached here in the morning. The animal ran amok for more than three kilometres in Koyilandy area after the tranquillizer was fired.
