FIST OF FURY: Suspended TDP and CPI(M) legislators protesting outside the Assembly premises in Hyderabad on Thursday. PHOTO: P.V. SIVAKUMAR
HYDERABAD: The detention of CPI(M) MLA Sunnam Rajaiah by police as he was returning here from his native Bhadrachalam in Khammam district on Wednesday night caused a furore in the Assembly on Thursday leading to the suspension of 19 members of Telugu Desam and seven of CPI (M). After their suspension, TDP and CPI (M) members staged a "dharna" at the entrance of the House for sometime. Two BJP members were earlier suspended for stalling the proceedings over the delay in release of scholarships to SC, ST, and BC students. All the 28 members were suspended for the day. Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy's assurance to take action against police officers found guilty within 24 hours failed to pacify the agitated members. He said the Director General of Police was asked to inquire and submit the report by Thursday evening. Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy also promised legislative action if Mr. Rajaiah gave a notice of breach of privilege. He adjourned the House when his repeated pleas to the members to resume their seats went in vain.
