BANGALORE: The Bangalore police on Wednesday night arrested G. Chandrasekhar (25), prime accused in the rape and murder in Vijayawada of Lakshmi Sujatha, a Telugu TV channel newsreader, on February 10.

The police, on a tip-off, raided a house at Nanjappa Circle in Shanthinagar and arrested Chandrasekhar, a make-up man with Teja channel.

Sujatha (28) worked as a newsreader with the channel in Hyderabad.

According to the police, Chandrasekhar had lured Sujatha to Vajram Lodge in Vijayawada, promising her a loan of Rs. 50,000. When she turned up there from her hometown Gudivada, Chandrasekhar allegedly drugged, raped and stabbed her to death.

The Vijayawada police on Tuesday had arrested two alleged accomplices. Chandrasekhar, who had fled to Tirupati, came to Bangalore on Wednesday and went to the Shanthinagar lodging of his former colleague, who now works as a makeup man with a private television channel here. The colleague, who was aware that the police were on the lookout for Chandrasekhar, alerted Bangalore Police Commissioner Neelam Achuta Rao.

Subsequently, a team raided the house and arrested the accused. A blood-stained shirt and a pair of trousers were seized.

A police team from Andhra Pradesh arrived here on Thursday and took Chandrasekhar to Vijayawada.

Nellore staff reporter writes: Parents of Chandu claimed that their son had not committed the murder. Taking a dig at the police, Bandla Sivaprasad Rao and Hamsavani alleged that somebody was behind the killing.

"Our son is innocent and he is incapable of committing such an act," they said.
