Revolver seized

WARANGAL: The police raided the house of a TDP leader Ravinder and seized an unlicensed revolver at Ramnagar in Hanamkonda on Thursday. Ravinder is sarpanch of Datla. Party district president R. Prakash Reddy told Soumya Mishra, MP, that since Datla was faction-ridden, the sarpanch possessed the weapon. - Staff Reporter

Man `killed' by son

ADILABAD: Tulsiram (55), a farmer from Kobbai in Bela mandal, was allegedly killed by his son Amul in his fields on Wednesday. Tulsiram allegedly scolded his son for being negligent.

KVs for six towns

KADAPA: The Government sanctioned Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) in Kadapa, Eluru, Venkatagiri, Vizianagaram, Khammam and Warangal, district Collector M.T. Krishna Babu said on Thursday. Application forms costing Rs. 200 each would be sold at a counter in old Government hospital here till March 10. - Staff Reporter

Two bookies held

KADAPA: The Central Crime Station police arrested two cricket bookies — Shaik Kaleshavali and Pathan Shujath Ali Khan — of Kadapa city, near old municipal market complex here, and recovered Rs. 1.35 lakhs, two cell phones and a colour TV, D. Narasimha Reddy, DSP, said on Thursday. They were remanded in judicial custody. - Staff Reporter

Aussie delegation

HYDERABAD: A high-level delegation headed by Premier of Government of South Australia will visit the State on February 19.

ADILABAD: Janardhan Kendre, a farmer from Guruj in Gudihatnoor mandal on Thursday attempted suicide by consuming poison when Revenue officials went to his house to serve an eviction order issued by the Utnoor Special Deputy Collector, Tribal Welfare. The 6-acre land was sought to be restored to the tribals who were the rightful owners. Kendre was rushed to Ichoda Primary Health Centre where he was treated. - Staff Reporter

Property recovered

WARANGAL: The town police arrested two persons and seized stolen property worth Rs. 4.20 lakhs on Thursday. Additional SP S D Gautam said G. Venkanna of Gudur mandal and V. John Raju of Rajahmundry were taken into custody and two gold chains and seven two -wheelers were recovered from them. -Staff Reporter

Apprentice teachers storm Collectorate

Kakinada: Apprentice teachers, led by N. Sesha Reddy, MLC candidate for the Godavari districts teachers' constituency, laid seize to he Collectorate here on Thursday protesting against the government's policy on their service conditions. They raised slogans in support of their demands which include regularisation of service from the date of appointment and granting of notional increments. Earlier they took out a rally. -Correspondent

Record loading

Kakinada: Ms. Vishwa Shipping Services created a new record by loading a quantity of 6066 MT on rice bags on to the ship `MV Team Effort' at the anchorage port here in 24 hours on February 12, according to Ravipati Ram Gopal and Suresh Kumar Sharma, directors of the agency.

The previous record was loading of 5,000 MT on to the ship `MV Dobrush' on December 19,2005 and 5020 MT on the ship `MV You Yue' on July 16, 2006. - Correspondent

Sanitation workers call off strike

VIZIANAGARAM: Sanitation workers in Salur municipality, who were one strike for the last 10 days, called off their agitation following an assurance given by the municipal council that salaries for four months out of eight-month due would be paid by Monday. The municipality needs Rs.18 lakhs to clear wages for four months to 60 sanitation workers, according to officials. - Correspondent

Review meet

VIZIANAGARAM: The first phase of the `Indiramma' programme in the district was successful, claimed Zilla Parishad Chairperson B. Appala Naidu on Thursday. Of the 65,473 houses sanctioned under the programme, 58,028 houses were grounded so far in villages.

At a review meeting with MPDOs and district officials at ZP conference hall here on Thursday, he asked them to appoint village committees to monitor the housing.

Farm labourer ends life

Kakinada: Bonthu Nageswera Rao, an agricultural labourer, reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his home in Pedapatnam Agraharam on Thursday. -Correspondent
