TIRUPATI: Curtains are up for the Legislative Council elections with the Chittoor district administration issuing the notification to elect members for the Council after a gap of over two decades. Chittoor, Nellore and Prakasam districts have been combined to constitute the Rayalaseema (East) constituency and Chittoor is made the headquarters for the purpose of the election. Contesting candidates from the three districts have to file their nominations only at Chittoor before the District Collector in case of the Graduates and the Teachers constituencies and before the Joint Collector, in case of the seats under the local bodies category. The electoral college for the local bodies category comprised the ZPTCs, MPTCs , ward councillors and the chairpersons of the municipalities. As for the Chittoor district, they have to elect two candidates under the category to represent the district in the Council. In case of the Graduates and the Teachers constituencies, there is only one seat under each category for all the three districts put together and the respective electoral colleges have to elect accordingly.
Voter strength
Total number of voters under the local bodies category in the district is put at 1,172 and it could be a few votes either way in case of the other two districts as well. With regard to the combined strength of the graduate voters in the Rayalaseema (east) constituency is 1,61,124 while for Teachers, the strength is 14,638.
