BELGAUM: Members of the Belgaum District Kannada Organisations Action Committee staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Thursday to protest against what they alleged to be the sudden stopping of development works taken up as part of preparations for the Vishwa Kannada Sammelan. The sammelan, which was scheduled to be held in the city from February 23 to February 25, was indefinitely postponed in the wake of the award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. The protest was led by committee president Ashok Chandargi and former corporator Ramesh Sontakki.
Demand
The agitators demanded to know why the district administration had stopped development work, including road repairs and footpath constructions.
Funds released
The administration had begun the work recently after the Government released Rs. 15 crore to the district Rs. 10 crore for development work in the city and the rest for making arrangements for the sammelan.
Seeking details
The committee members also wanted to know the details of the funds spent so far on the projects that had been announced by the district administration. They said the administration had got sufficient time to complete all the proposed work and they were surprised that it had suddenly been halted. They wanted to know whether the Government had issued any orders to this effect.
