ONGOLE: Vigilance and Enforcement officials raided provision shops in Bapuji market complex here on Thursday in a bid to check hoarding of essential commodities and contain prices. They verified stocks in Vijayakrishna Traders and detected variation in stocks and sealed the shop. While the trader can stock dals up to 40 quintals, he was found stocking 57 quintals and the books showed stocks of 70 quintals. So the officials seized the stocks and sealed the shop. On knowing about the raid, other shops dealing with pulses pulled down their shutters and made themselves scarce. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Vigilance and Enforcement, S. Nazeer said that they had information about hoarding at Mahalakshmi and Saibaba dal mills. When they raided them, they found both the mills locked. They sought the help of Civil Supplies officials to seal both the mills for verification later. He said that they were verifying whether the stocks conformed to records, whether the traders paid Value Added Tax, agricultural market cess etc. He said the raids would continue for the next couple of days.
