Job for deceased officer's son

CHENNAI: The Government on Thursday sanctioned Rs.1.50 lakh under the Family Benefit Fund Scheme to the family of P.Govindasamy, Assistant Director of Panchayats in Dharmapuri district, who died on February 11.

An official release said the Government had also issued orders to appoint G. Prabhu, son of the deceased, as junior assistant in the Department of Rural Development in Namakkal district, on compassionate ground. A cheque for Rs.3,60,151 was handed over to Mr. Prabhu. This included the family benefit fund, provident fund and leave surrender benefit.

The Government had taken the decision in view of the circumstances under which Govindasamy died and also the condition of his kin, the release added. — Special Correspondent

IT raid on real estate firm

CHENNAI: Income Tax (Investigation Wing) officials on Wednesday carried out searches at the office and residences of partners of a firm engaged in real estate business in Chennai and seized Rs.2.50 crore.

According to official sources, the partners could not offer any explanation for the unaccounted money. The officials unearthed evidence indicating the suppression of receipts and on-money payments. Bank accounts of the firm and its partners and a bank locker were frozen. The sources said over10 officers searched three premises in T-Nagar. — Special Correspondent

Concern over arms seizure

CHENNAI: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy said on Thursday that the recent seizure of explosives in Tamil Nadu showed that LTTE activities were on the rise. This should open the eyes of all patriotic Indians to the security threat to the nation from the LTTE, he said in a statement here. — Special Correspondent

Adi Tamilar Peravai's appeal to Government

CHENNAI: The Adi Tamilar Peravai, a social movement working for the uplift of the Arundathiyar community, on Thursday demanded 6 per cent of 19 per cent reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in employment and education. Peravai president R. Adiyaman, while speaking to reporters here, alleged there was a subtle move to club Arundathiyars with linguistic minorities and exclude them from the SC list. As Arundathiyars were at the lowest rung of the SC community, he urged the Government to provide a reservation of 6 per cent to the community. — Special Correspondent

Farmers stage demonstration

NAGAPATTINAM: Hundreds of farmers took out a rally from Puthur to Head Post Office here on Thursday and staged a demonstration demanding that the Government take steps for complete review of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's final verdict. It was organised by the Cauvery Farmers Protection Association and led by its president A.V. Durairaj. B.N.S. Dhanapalan, general secretary of the association, M. Cheran and Arupathy Kalyanam, president and general secretary respectively of the Federation of Farmers Associations in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts took part. Walk-in interview

TIRUNELVELI: The Department of Management Studies of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University will hold a walk-in interview for the post of a temporary lecturer on February 20 at 11 a.m.

According to the Registrar, P. Chellathurai, candidates who were qualified as per University Grants Commission norms to handle postgraduate classes in Marketing Specialisation in the Department of Management Studies can appear for the interview at the university campus, Abhishekapatti.

Nagercoil: B.Tamil Iniyan (APRO - News) has been appointed as the Public Relations Officer (in-charge) in Kanyakumari district after the PRO, Ezhil Azagan, was posted as PRO of Tamil Arasu on Thursday.

Rectified spirit seized

Nagercoil: The police arrested one person and seized rectified spirit worth Rs. two lakh from him on Thursday.

According to sources, a police team, based on a tip-off, intercepted a car at Thikkurichi and seized 17 cans each containing 35 litres of spirit.

Fire accident

Nagercoil: Uneasy calm prevailed at the Padmanabhapuram wooden palace on Wednesday after a fire broke out on its backyard.

According to sources, the palace is situated on an area of six acres and the workers engaged in cleaning the backyard had carelessly thrown away pieces of beedis. However, the employees, led by the curator, Mohan Nair, put out the flames.

Train services to be cancelled partially

MADURAI: Some of the train services between Tenkasi and Shencottah are to be cancelled partially or regulated on two days, Sunday (February 18) and Wednesday (February 21), to facilitate gauge conversion work in the section.

According to a Southern Railway press release, 744 Kollam-Tirunelveli Town passenger, 745 Tirunelveli Town-Kollam passenger, 6383 Tirunelveli Town-Kollam express and 6384 Kollam-Tirunelveli Town express will be partially cancelled between Shencottah and Tenkasi.

The 741/748 Tirunelveli Town-Kollam-Tirunelveli Town passengers will be partially cancelled between Tenkasi and Kollam. The 747 Tirunelveli Town-Shencottah passenger will be regulated at Tenkasi for two hours from 8 to 10 p.m. and 782 Kollam-Tenkasi passenger at Shencottah for 20 minutes from 9.40 to 10 p.m. - Staff Reporter

"Regularise services of hotel workers"

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi-Thanjavur Hotel and General Workers' Union has urged the Labour Welfare Officers to initiate action as per law against those hotel owners who employed child labourers below the age of 14. A resolution to this effect was adopted at its meeting here recently. It wanted the hotels to regularise the services of those hotel workers who had worked for six months besides providing them with uniform and separate rest room for them. It wanted the hotel managements to close the hotels on government holidays and festival days or provide double salary for workers.

Works inspected

TIRUCHI: Collector Ashish Vachhani inspected ongoing development works in Mannachanallur panchayat union on Wednesday. A total number of 15 works have been taken up at a cost of Rs. 11.66 lakh in Koothur, Bikshandarkoil, Kiliyanallur, Kariyamanickam and Sirugambur panchayats. Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 82.85 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 231 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,500 cusecs.

Assistance

Erode: Welfare assistance worth Rs. 11.5 lakh was provided to 242 beneficiaries during a grievance day camp held recently at Thambureddypalayam in Dharapuram division, says a release from the Collectorate. Distributing the assistance, Collector D. Karthikeyan said in keeping with the State Government's order to conduct such camps in remote villages, the administration began collecting grievance petitions a month ago. He added that petitions received from 153 others would be duly considered for further action.

Businessman killed

Salem: A businessman Subramani (55) of Selliyamman Nagar was killed and two others sustained injuries in an accident in Vazhapadi on Thursday. They were travelling in a car, when a bus hit the vehicle.

98 special cattle camps to be held

DINDIGUL : A total of 98 special cattle camps would be held throughout the district before March 31 to check the health of animals and birds and detect disease, if any.

A sum of Rs. 5 lakh had been sanctioned for this purpose under the special cattle protection scheme, said Collector R. Vasuki.

Inaugurating the first cattle camp at Azhagarnaickenpatti near here on Wednesday, she said the district had 2.4 lakh cows, 68,000 buffaloes, 2.14 lakh sheep and three lakh goats. Calves and chicken were given at subsidised price to farmers and preventive medicines administered to 400 cattle, 350 goats and 250 sheep.

22 refugees arrive at Arichamunai

RAMANATHAPURAM : Twenty-two refugees on Thursday reached Arichamunai.

Sources said the refugees were from Vavuniya and Trincomalee areas. They included eight women and eight children. Preliminary enquiry is on.

Cultural contest

DINDIGUL : The Department of Art and Culture would organise a district-level cultural competition for school children on behalf of Jawahar Bal Bavan at Government Higher Secondary School on Palani Road here at 10 a.m. on February 17, according to V. Jayabal, Director, Jawahar Bal Bavan.

In a release here on Thursday, he said that children in 5-8, 9-12 and 13-16 age categories could take part in dance, vocal and drawing competitions. Special prizes would be given to first three toppers in each competition. Certificates would be given to all participants.

First rank holders in 9-12 and 13-16 age categories would be sent to take part in State-level competitions to be held at Kanchipuram.

Counselling for teachers

MADURAI : Counselling for transfers of graduate teachers and Tamil pandits of government high schools and higher secondary schools will be held at the office of Chief Educational Officer here on February 17 and 20.

Also, teachers working in Block Resource Centres and Cluster Resource Centres could attend the counselling, a press release from R. Pandurangan, CEO, said.

For those seeking transfer within the district, the counselling will be held on February 17.

And, for those seeking outside the district, counselling takes place on February 20.

MADURAI : The water level in the Periyar dam on Thursday stood at 112.70 feet (136 feet) with an inflow 107 cusecs and a discharge of 300 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 30.77 feet (71 feet) with an inflow of 24 cusecs and a discharge of 841 cusecs.

Udhagamandalam: Elaborate arrangements have been made by the Isha Yoga Centre, Kotagiri chapter, for the celebration of Mahasivarathri-2007 on Friday. According to the head of the chapter B. Hartal

Udhagamandalam: A half a day hartal was observed at Naduvattam near here on Thursday. The police said it was in protest against the shortcomings in the Primary Health Centre at Naduvattam. Residents of Naduvattam wanted a permanent doctor to be posted at the PHC. A demonstration was also staged opposite the PHC.
