Sridhar Parusharam Ratnagiri

GULBARGA: Sridhar Parusharam Ratnagiri of the Bharatiya Janata Party, from Mahagaon constituency of the Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat, was elected vice-president of the panchayat. He defeated Lalithabai Veerappa of the Congress by eight votes in the election held at the zilla panchayat meeting hall here on Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey conducted the election and declared Mr. Ratnagiri elected after a head count of the members supporting him. There was no cross voting, and the ruling Janata Dal (S)-BJP got its candidate elected with the support of some independent members. This brought the BJP to power in the panchayat for the first time.

Of 65 members in the House, 64 were present at the time of voting. One seat is vacant owing to the death of the JD(S) member Rajasekhar Patil from Kaligi in Chitapur taluk. While Mr. Ratnagiri secured 36 votes, Ms. Veerappa got 28 votes. All seven associate members of the JD(S) along with 20 of its members voted in favour of the BJP candidate. Similarly, all 25 members of the Congress and three of its associate members voted in favour of their candidate.

Resignation

The election for the post of vice-president was necessitated following the resignation of Raja Hanumappa Naik.

Both Mr. Pandey and the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat P.C. Jaffer congratulated Mr. Ratnagiri.
