PAP issue may be taken up with Tamil Nadu

Special Correspondent

Another meeting of Joint Water Regulatory Board proposed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran said here on Thursday that Kerala would seek resolution of the issues over release of water under the Parambikulam Aliyar Agreement by Tamil Nadu at the Government level if the matters could not be settled in the Joint Water Regulatory Board. The Minister said that the meeting of the Board on Wednesday was not cordial and only three of the 11 items on the agenda could be taken up. Another meeting of the Board had been proposed to see whether the issues could be sorted out.

Mr. Premachandran said Kerala had strongly raised the issue of violation of the pact by Tamil Nadu at the meeting. Kerala was eligible to get 7.25 tmc ft (thousand million cubic feet) of water into the Chittoor River through the Manacadavu weir. So far this (water) year, it had received only 5.532 tmc ft and Tamil Nadu had violated stipulations regarding maintenance of water level on February 1. Kerala wanted the balance quantity of water and a backlog of 5.59 tmc ft. Besides, Kerala was entitled to excess yield during the past water year, which amounted to 0.69 tmc ft. He said the Government would decide later this month whether it should seek a review of the award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.
