Paloli told to appear on February 26

Staff Reporter

Kochi : A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court has exempted Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty from appearing in person before the court on Thursday in a contempt of court case.

The Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice M. N. Krishnan, however, directed the Minister to appear in person before the court on February 26, the next date of hearing.

The court dispensed with the personal appearance of the Editors of Mangalam, Thejus and the printer and publisher of Madhyamam in the case.

The case was instituted by the High Court Registrar General on a directive from the Acting Chief Justice. A speech reportedly made by the Minister on January 30 in Kozhikode had tended to scandalise and lower the dignity of the court in the eye of the public, according to the charges.

The Minister was also charged with creating suspicion and doubt about the judiciary in the minds of the people.
