KSEB signs pact with NTPC

NEW DELHI: Kerala Government on Thursday signed an agreement with the Nuclear Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) for implementing the Rajiv Gandhi Grameena Vaidyutikaran Yojana. The agreement was signed in New Delhi and the signatories included Kerala State Electricity Board and Rural Electrification Corporation. A Rs.438-crore project, the agreement involved the first phase of Rs.200 crore and would be completed in two years. Once this programme was in place, every village of the State would be electrified, Electricity Minister A.K. Balan said after the agreement was signed.

Directive to consider bail petitions

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Thursday directed the sessions court in Kozhikode trying the Marad massacre case to consider the bail petitions of 23 accused and pass orders on them. The court said the fact remained that the petitioners had been facing trial, along with the rest of the accused, for more than three years. The prosecution had examined 251 witnesses and marked 400 material objects. It would not be possible to evaluate the voluminous evidence if a portion of the same was culled out and pleaded that they be considered for the purpose of bail. — Staff Reporter

Date extended

Thiruvananathapuram: The Government has extended till June 30 the time allowed for remitting the DA arrears in the Provident Fund. The order issued in this connection is applicable to the instalments of DA sanctioned from January 1 and July 1 from 1997 to 2004. The remittance can be made through the salary bill for June. — Staff Reporter

Air-India issues warning

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Air-India has warned passengers against buying tickets of Air-India Express (AIE) from unauthorised sources.

Air India Manager, Thiruvananthapuram, H.A. Munaff, in a statement here on Thursday, said instances of fraudulent issuance of air tickets have come to the notice of the Mumbai police and FIRs have been registered. AIE has witnessed many credit card frauds where passengers have procured tickets from illegal sources claiming to be agents of the airline. The airline has asked the passengers to check the validity of the sources offering AIE tickets or to contact the nearest AIE office. — Staff Reporter

THRISSUR: Freedom fighter and former MLA C.S. Gangadharan has been selected for the Tomyas award instituted by Tomyas Advertising in memory of freedom fighter and journalist V.A. Kesavan Nair. The award carries a purse of Rs.50,000 and statuette.

Honorary doctorate

THRISSUR: The N.D. University of Agriculture and Technology has conferred honorary doctorate on A.M. Michael, former vice-chancellor of the Kerala Agricultural University.

Woman hospitalised with acid burns

THRISSUR: A 44-year-old woman was admitted to Government Medical College here on Wednesday night with acid burns on her face. Sobhana of Kottakunnathu at Kakkadu in Kunnamkulam complained to the police that her husband, Thampi, 55, poured acid on her face around 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday when she refused to pay him to buy liquor. Thampi was an alcoholic, she told the police. — Staff Reporter

Car reported missing

THRISSUR: The police said they received a complaint from Sajan, son of Varathappan of Chunkath, that a car owned by him was missing from his house at Iyyal since 3 a.m. on Thursday. A sum of Rs.3 lakh was kept in the car, the complaint said. — Staff Reporter

`Socially relevant creations endure'

THRISSUR: Only artistic creations that portray social realities endure the test of time, dancer-choreographer Mallika Sarabhai said. She was addressing a meeting held at the Amala Cancer Hospital and Research Centre here on Thursday. — Staff Reporter

THRISSUR: The N.D. University of Agriculture and Technology has conferred honorary doctorate on A.M. Michael, former vice-chancellor of the Kerala Agricultural University. A function in this regard was held at Kumarganj in Faizabad recently.

`Spirituality is a deeper search'

THRISSUR: N. Gopalakrishnan of the Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage has called upon students to not confuse spirituality with religion. Delivering a lecture on `Religion and science' at the Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute here on Thursday, Mr. Gopalakrishnan said spirituality represented a deeper search to discover an unseen reality that binds all. Francis Alappatt, director of the institute, and V.K. Ramankutty, principal, also spoke. — Staff Reporter
