Another historical site comes to light

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Archaeological Department has discovered one more site of historic importance near Kirsola village, 35 km from Rohtak, which is 70 km from Delhi.

Minister of State for Archives, Archaeology and Museums Meena Mandal said here on Thursday that the site is likely to produce valuable information about the downfall of Harappan culture and its merger with Painted Grey Ware cultures.

She said the site was discovered on a link road from Julana to Kirsola during an exploration expedition by a team of the Archaeological Department led by Deputy Director J. S. Khatri last December.

Archaeological explorations were being conducted from January 2006 onward in the palio-channel of the Drishadvati river specifically in and around Meham in Rohtak district. The discovery of Harappan city-site near village Farmana, locally known as Daksh-Khera, led the team to explore further areas towards Julana in the north-east direction.

Three more sites -- Bedwa, Farmana-2 and Kheri Meham -- were discovered earlier at regular intervals of 5 km each.

Ms. Mandal said these Harappan and late Harappan sites proved the existence of a 5,000-year-old civilization in the area.

The Kirsola site was spread over more than 11 acres, rising to a height of four metres from the present ground level. It contained two-fold cultural material of Harappan and Painted Grey Ware associated with the Mahabharata period. Much of the site was intact and a little area was under cultivation.
