NEW DELHI: When her former employer threw a jug full of acid on 19-year-old Haseena Hussain's face in a Bangalore street, nobody came to her rescue. After she was taken to a private hospital, surgery was not performed due to financial reasons and she lay unattended for nearly two days at a Government hospital till her father came from Orissa. Eight years down the line, Haseena, her face completely disfigured and her vision lost, remains confined to her home and dependent on others. "I want to be a little more independent," said Haseena at a press conference here. There are many more like her. With instances of acid attacks on women on the rise over the years, women's groups are campaigning for greater awareness and sensitivity on the issue. The need for immediate medical attentionand the need for the judiciary to see it as a gender-related issue was underlined at the press conference organised by Human Rights Law Network.
